A great article on AnandTech titled "WHS: A Series of Unfortunate Events" talks about the data corruption bug that plagues the Windows Home Server. I love the whole WHS concept, but appreciate the straight talk in the article. The article explains how the problem is basic to the algorithm of the Drive Extender software and not just a bug in it's implementation.
What is a Windows Home Server user to do to avoid data corruption? First off, you are safe with copying files to/from WHS. The problem happens when you use an application to edit files directly on WHS (and then only under rare conditions) and only on systems with more than one hard drive.
I dispute the article's claim that as most servers are sold with one hard drive the problem is smaller that it could be. I know from what I see on this site that many people that bought HP E470s (with a single 500GB drive) are adding drives themselves.
So we can do nothing but wait for a fix to the data corruption problem and look forward to a Win2008 based WHSv2.
