Is this software the exact same thing that HP has installed or does HP media server have some extras with it? I have always wondered if it was cheaper to build one then buy an HP.

HP adds some extra things like a client side iTunes integrator and a server side Firefly Media Server which is open-source and can be dowloaded and added yourself. You can probably build one yourself cheaper, but the HP solution is great way to go and a good price.
