Stuff to pimp your Windows Home Server

Hacking Windows Home Server is a blog dedicated to Microsoft's WHS technology. Brought to you by Donavon West, Microsoft MVP and author of LiveGadgets.net and donavon.com I'll also discuss the Hewlett-Packard HP MediaSmart Server EX470, EX475, EX485, EX487, the T7-HSA Tranquil Harmony Home Server and any other new Home Server hardware platforms that arise. You can also call this hacking or hackz. In any case I will show you some cool things to make your Microsoft Windows Home Server even sweeter.

A blog devoted to getting the most out of your
Windows Home Server by Microsoft MVP Donavon West.

Mommy, Why is There a Server in the House?

Some of you have heard of the book "Mommy, Why is There a Server in the House?" but who out there actually has a copy? (unless you went to CES where Microsoft was handing them out by the truckload) It's actually a beautifully illustrated book that Microsoft came out with as part of a odd-ball marketing scheme to promote it's Windows Home Server.

It does have value as a children's book, I guess, but don't take it too seriously. It's written by the fictional author Tom O'Connor, Ph.D. My favorite quote from the book is "Or your uncle who smells like bark". Bark? (I also like the part where the dog pees on the laptop.)

Anyhoo... You can peruse through the first few pages of the book above, read the whole thing at Stay At Home Servers, order a paperback copy from Amazon for USD$5.95, or...

Want a copy for free?

imageAs it just so happens, I have a few copies of the book available to give away for free: three are paperback and one is a special hard cover collector's edition signed by Home Server General Manager Charlie Kindel (seen here in this video explaining the various capabilities of the WHS). Thx Charlie!

What do you need to do to be eligible to win? (This is complicated so you may want to write this down) Simply reply to this post and I'll put your name in the hat for the drawing (I really do use a hat). That's it!

Any reply will do (ex: "I'd like a free book!" or "me too!"), but why not use the chance to say something profound. Tell people how you use your Windows Home Server. If you built it yourself, what is your hardware configuration?

Multiply your odds

Here is where it really gets good. Tell your friends about the give-away. For each friend who replies to this post and mentions that he/she was referred by you, not only are they eligible to win, but you will get another chance to win (limit 5 referrals). Make sure that they mention the exact name you use to post (ex: "referred by SkinnyPuppy"). In other words, refer five friends and your name goes in the hat 6 times!

With 4 books available and only 8 readers of my blog, your chances are pretty darned good smile_wink.  (You know I'm joking about the 8 readers, right?) Heck, I'll even toss in a couple of Windows Home Server beer koozies with each book! I don't even need your email address (unless you win).

I'm closing the contest and drawing 1 grand prize winner (for the signed hardcover) and 3 runners-up(for the paperbacks) on June 12, 2008 and will announce the winners in a follow-up post a few days later, so check back to see if you've won! As with the other contest, this is open to U.S. residents only (sorry). Good luck!

Fin. Why not comment on what you've just read or even Digg It!

I can no longer get any work done at home as my one year old LOVES to "type" on my laptop. I gave her a broken one of her own, but she knows there's a difference. I don't know what I'm going to do when she figures out there's a server in the basement - I guess I really need this book! :)

For years I ran my own Windows Servet at home, but wanted something that let me enjoy the features of a home network without me having to be a network admin at home. WHS fit the bill perfectly -- I love the automatic backups, and have purchased Avast Anti-Virus that integrates and monitors the virus databases on all my machines which is a big help in a household with a teenager.

I built my machine myself using a Dell GX620 (Pentium 4HT) and added 4GB of RAM and currently have 3 250GB hard drives. Two days ago I had a hard drive failure and it was the easiest recovery I ever had. I popped the new drive in, a few clicks in the console and whala -- everything was back to normal!

It's great to see a product work so well -- and I can't wait to see what the future brings to WHS.

Windows home server is one of the best ideas I have seen come out of MS in a long time that is geared towards the home user.

I have run a server at home for many years now and it is obviously where the home is going, and until we all have gigabit internet connections that server sure as hell isn't going to be rented somewhere.

WHS is so easy even my dad was able to figure it out !

Count me in!! Just wanted to say that I built my wife a new quad core monster gaming rig in February and the only thing I used from her old computer was the new SATA hard drive, so what to do with the old computer? Then I came across Windows Home Server! Picked up a copy and installed on an 80GB drive I had lying around and immediately fell in love with it. The next week I picked up a 500GB hard drive (external, usb) plugged it into the server, went through the add a drive wizard and voila! massive storage space! Now I have one location for all of my music, movies, photos and important documents that can be accessed anywhere! Now throw in the automatic backups and it's a dream come true. Once the fix for the data corruption is out,I will be able to rest easy knowing that my data is safe and sound (as much as it can be on a computer). Thanks Windows Home Server!

Man, the things I could do with those beer kozies... And my 16 month old loves, LOVES the easter egg christmas light show I found on your site so she's already a convert to the home server. Didn't roll my own, did the HP solution. I got it to use as a backup, but since have installed hamachi so I can access my network drives anywhere, ORB for all my music, and it now backs up my parents machine, my buddy's machine... gonna need new hard drives soon. I have updated the memory and proc thanks to your guides and it also has Avast! installed, so it isn't anywhere near bone stock. Oh yeah... me too, please!
