As reported yesterday on We Got Served (scooped again), HP is releasing it’s MediaSmart Connect.
It hooks up to your HDTV and acts like an Extender for Windows Media Center. The really cool thing about the MediaSmart Connect is that if works seamlessly with your HP MediaSmart Server (EX470) to play your video files (which is why we’re all talking about it on a Home Server blog).
It features:
- HDMI or Component video output supporting 720p or 1080i
- Built-in 10/ 100 based-T wired or IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless
- Supports JPEG, BMP, GIF and PNG photos
It should be a pretty cool device and I’m getting in line to get one for myself.
If pre-ordering from Newegg, your prices is $315 after an instant savings of $35.00 (if ordered from June 22nd - June 28th, 2008 and from July 6th - July 12th, 2008).
You can also pre-order from Amazon.com (where the price is $325).

Do you know if this will support .VOB files or does it have the same constraints as other extenders (and the D-Link, for instance)?
My Linksys DMA2100 does not and I doubt that this one does either. That sure would be nice though.
What would be the advantages of this device over an XBOX 360 (which I already have)?
@Craig: Best I can tell right now is built in wireless, otherwise the 360 appears to do everything the HP MediaSmart device does.
