Software Update for the HP MediaSmart Server

Corresponding with Microsoft’s Power Pack 1 release (get that first if you haven’t already), HP has released a software update for the HP MediaSmart Server. This update delivers enhanced media streaming capability from PacketVideo, server-side anti-virus protection from McAfee and prepares the HP MediaSmart Server for compatibility with 64-bit operating systems.

The software update is available now via an automatic update, or users can select “Check for Updates” in the Windows Home Server console. If you’re like me, you want the update NOW.

Here’s how you can get it:

  1. Open the Windows Home Server Console (i.e. double click on the tray icon)
  2. Click on the MediaSmart Server tab and click on the Check for Updates link

  3. If a few seconds the download will start.
  4. You may see this dialog if you may not previously installed the April update. If so that’s ok. Just install that first, then repeat the procedure until there are no further updates. Otherwise just skip to the net step.

  5. You should then see this dialog. Click Next and follow along.

  6. After a few minutes the setup will complete and you are done!

  7. You will likely see a client alert, which you can optionally install below.

Install the McAffe Software

If you want to install the optional McAffee software (and a few others that may be available), follow these directions. If not, skip to the next section.

  1. Once again, Open the Windows Home Server Console
  2. Click on the Settings button

  3. Click on the Add-ins tab
    image
  4. Click on the Available Add-Ins tab and install to your heart’s content
    image

No Thanks Mr. McAffe

If you DON’T want to install McAffe (and don’t want the constant nagging):

  1. Open the Windows Home Server Console
  2. Click on Network at Risk
    image
  3. Check the “Ignore this issue” box and the warning will go away.

Fin. Why not comment on what you've just read or even Digg It!

They both installed for me with no problem. I even forgot to unintall PP1 beta before installing the HP update. I was able to uninstall/reinstall the latest PP1 with no effect the HP update. HP's rep later said it doesn't matter which order you install them in, so don't be scared!

Can someone please help me?
I have HP MediaSmart Server with 3 TB hard drives. I am trying to update the HP software, however I keep getting an error stating I don't have enough space. I don't understand how this could be?!? I don't have any add-ins installed, and I never put any unnecessary software on the system drive.

I really don't know what I should do.My server is up to date, and I have PP1 installed. Under my sys. drive properties, I have 67.7 MB free out of 20 GB's.

Thank you,
B. Gray

I would take a look at the MediaSmartHome.com forums, or call HP support. It sounds like your server is not recognizing your drives. Are they installed in the front SATA bays, or in the USB or eSATA ports?

I installed this last night on my HP and everything is working OK but the server terminal seems considerably less responsive. I haven't upgraded the memory yet (I just placed the order at EggHead) but is anyone else experiencing this?

I installed only the PPV streaming add-in, and like you Martin I have just the stock 512 MB RAM. I did notice that bringing up the console took a little longer than usual, but once it loaded I noticed nothing I would consider considerable.

Heads up I installed Mcafee and it really really slowed down my WHS so bad i uninstalled it couple of hours later. As soon as i had uninstalled it my performanced increased.

I appeared to have installed the updates (including Mcaffee) but could not connect from the clients afterwards. Even a ping command would not 'see' the WHS.

Haven't seen others with a similar problem, but I attributed it to Mcaffee likely blocking ports. I uninstalled it from the Control Panel using remote desktop.

I wonder if anyone realizes that the Windows 2003 OS is actually Windows 2003
Small Business Server and can be patched to SP1 for Windows 2003?

I did this, and found a great improvement in connectability via networking, as well as the benifets of the SP1 patches.

I am also the proud owner of Tiny Software's TPF Server Firewall (6.5.126) which was my favorite firewall for XP, but will run on Windows 2003 servers. Much better than the lame Windows Firewall.

Another great piece of malware software is Avast!'s Antivirus for WHS, which pumps a client copy to any machine on the LAN, and schedules runs on those clients at the scheduled times. The cost is very reasonable, and much better protection that the lame McAfee given to us by HP.

For the AMD processor upgrade and heat issues associated with this, there is an "Add-in" for WHS at the "We Got Served" website for WHS addins, which will control the built-in fans much better than "SpeedFan" (No offense given) as I use "Speedfan" on all my clients, and it works there very well due to the "config" files for ASUS MB's being provided and available.

I have worked for MS for ten years and have a list of recommended services which should be turned on and turned off, if anyone is interested.

Feel free to eail me.

I have installed a HP Proliant ML370 G1, with a Windows Home Server Version and I'm particularly interested to run the HP photo Webshare.
I've downloaded the package: http://www.redmondpie.com/hp-mediasmart-server-update-1.3-direct-download/ -> that allowed me to install HP tools ! :-)

But the webshare components are not installed!
Do you have an idea how could I update my Home Server with this ?
Should it be enough to install the web sources in the IIS ?
Any one can help me ?

They really need to make a way to be able to import your contacts into the photo webshare application. Adding each contact individually, is a real nightmare!
