Update the Marvell 6121 eSATA Driver

If you have an HP MediaSmart Server and are using an external eSATA drive, you may want to keep the driver up-to-date. I use my eSATA connector (and thus the Marvell driver) as I am using an external 4 drive bay SATA enclosure which gives my main system a possible 8 drives in total.

Above is a picture of my system. The unit on the left is my red HP MediaSmart Server, the box next to it is the 4 drive external bay and the one on the right is my DIY KPC Home Server and on top of that is my iHomeServer. The USB cable running out the front of the EX470 is attached to my color printer.

Here are the steps to update your driver:

  1. Download the latest Marvell 6121 driver V1.2.0.57 from the ASUS website, unzip it and copy it over to your MediaSmart server (a good place would be to the \\server\software share).
  2. Remote desktop into your home server (follow steps 2-4 here if you need help), locate the driver and execute drvSetup.exe. Click "Next" through the series of screens.

  3. When you see this warning, click "Install Anyway".

  4. If you are connected to an external drive (or array), the driver will temporarily become unusable and the drives unreachable. WHS will display a warning. It is a good idea if you do this when the system is idle (i.e. not load balancing and no one is writing data).

  5. You will see another dialog asking if it is OK to install the drive. Click Yes.

  6. That's it!

  7. You can verify that the new driver is installed in the Device manager.

@aaron, Please, this is NOT a political blog. Leave your "boo obama" comments on donavon.com, not here. All I did was to take a picture of my systems. I didn't post it for political resons.

Hey Donavon,
Thanks...I did this driver update and it went very smooth. No problems. I've got the same 4-bay eSATA enclosure, except mine is silver. I got my from Fry's Electronics. They had an awsome sale and I picked mine up from only $149.00. I didn't really need it at the time, but I couldn't pass up the deal.

Question - Why should one do it? Is this supported upgrade by HP? If so, why HP is not pushing it through their normal update program?

Ditto bogdan, I have a 5 bay external. If it won't recognize the 5th drive, then I really don't see the point. It works well now.
