Pick up an HP EX470 only $379

HP Mediasmart Server Ex470, Refurbished

The HP shopping site is selling the HP EX470 for only $379. If you read my review of the HP EX485 back in December, you know that HP has announced a unit to replace the EX470, but the units are very similar and you can install many of the new software features on the older models.

Please note that this is a refurbished unit. Click here to buy or for detail.

Fin. Why not comment on what you've just read or even Digg It!

What are the software Differences between the HP server and making your own using a copy of Windows home server? I'm looking at the amount of PC i can get out of the $444 that it would end up costing me (shipping and taxes) and that for about the same price (after upgrades) I could end up with a pretty sweet rig (2.5 quad phenom 4gb ram) and convert my current desktop (a 2.4 dual core w/4gb ram) to a Home server? I guess what I'm asking is there any advantage to the HP other than size.

The HP appeals to people who want a compact, lower power computer with 4 hot swappable SATA bays. I bet your Quad Core monster draws 4 times the power as one of these. With a Home Server running 24/7, that adds up over the course of a year.

It's also pre-build so there no computer experience required and certainly no screwdriver experience either. it doesn't sound like that is an issue with you, but it is for many people.

If I were you, I'd build up a sweet powerhouse client system with that quad core and back it up with the HP.

@google - This from an HP rep:

"All official HP refurbs come with a 90 day warranty which covers the entire unit including missing parts. The HP MediaSmart Server refurbs go through two quality checks."

Hope this helps.
