A closer look at the HP LX195 mainboard (literally)

hp-lx195-mainboard

For all of you hardware buffs out there, I've taken this photo of HP's MediaSmart Server LX195 mainboard and added some notations of the major landmarks (click on the photo above for a 2200x2200 high resolution image).

Is that a VGA connector?

Some have asked the the answer is Yes, that connector in the upper right hand corner is for a KVM (keyboard/video/monitor) and I can tell you that my Gen 1 VGA cable works just fine. However, the USB keyboard is disabled during power up, so I can't get into the BIOS.

Fin. Why not comment on what you've just read or even Digg It!

Thanks, can you get a photo of the Acer motherboard ? I read that there is a KVM connector that is also simular. Also since the LX195 is priced the same as the Acer I would go for the Acer, you get more for your money.

Speaking about Home Server motherboards, check out Via's http://www.deviceguru.com/via-preps-home-server-mainboard/

8 sata connectors, count em 8.

I feel HP had the lead when they got into the home server business, but since new machines have become available, and they see that's out there, they have taken a step backwards with the LX195 should be $199

Apparently there is a Gen 2 cable with a PS2 keyboard/mouse splitout. But $70 is abit steep for something that I'd probably limit to a RAM upgrade anyway.

Thanks for the pics Donavon! My only issue with the Atom systems is that CPUs are not upgradable since the Atom CPU is soldered into the mainboard!! I got my EX485 from Newegg for $449.00, that's only $50.00 more than the Acer which is also an Atom based system...

I think you mean Keyboard/Video/MOUSE not Monitor.

I wonder if there is a way to unlock the PS2/USB keyboard block? The new EX-48X series force you to set a jumper (http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2009/01/09/how-to-unlock-the-ex487-bios/). I wonder if there is something similar on the LX195?

So with only one SATA port, is it safe to assume that it isn't possible to add more internal hard drives (with some case mods of course)?
