Stuff to pimp your Windows Home Server

Hacking Windows Home Server is a blog dedicated to Microsoft's WHS technology. Brought to you by Donavon West, Microsoft MVP and author of LiveGadgets.net and donavon.com I'll also discuss the Hewlett-Packard HP MediaSmart Server EX470, EX475, EX485, EX487, the T7-HSA Tranquil Harmony Home Server and any other new Home Server hardware platforms that arise. You can also call this hacking or hackz. In any case I will show you some cool things to make your Microsoft Windows Home Server even sweeter.

Giving credit where credit isn't due (or changing the Morse Code Credit text)

For you Morse Code Credit fans out there, I have more news for you. As posted earlier, I've decoded the text of the HP EX470 Easter Egg (click here to see the mystery text). But, with all due respect to the people to whom credit is completely deserved, I'll show you how to change the text that is transmitted.

First, a bit of warning. We will be changing the registry on the Home Server machine. If you are unsure about poking around where you don't belong, move on. Google "Britney Spears" or something (no I didn't make that a hyperlink). If you have the cojones, let's proceed:

  1. Remote Desktop into your Windows Home Server computer (follow steps 2-4 here if you need help).
  2. Run regedit (click Start, Run then type regedit and click OK).
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart Server\LEDs
  4. In the right hand panel, right click, select click New then String Value.

  5. Name the new string "CW" (no quotes) and press enter.
  6. Press enter again to change the value.
  7. Enter the string that you would like to have output when you select the "Morse Code Credits" theme. The only Morse code that I can accurately read is "SOS" (ie ... --- ...) so that's what I'm using as a test.
  8. Double click on the key named "Theme" and change the value to 10 hex (16 decimal) to change to the Morse Code Credits theme. You can also use the Ctrl + Alt + Shift method described in my original article.
  9. You should see the lights on the front of the HP EX470 MediaSmart Server flash:
    dot-dot-dot  dash-dash-dash  dot-dot-dot.

That's it folks. You can now enjoy hours of mindless fun armed only with an HP EX470 and this bit of earth shattering information.

Pop Quiz:

Who can tell me what "CW" stands for?

Fin. Why not comment on what you've just read or even Digg It!

I just released my new "Advanced Admin Console AddIn" which (besides other stuff) allows to fire up regedit.exe right from within the home server console. So RDPing to your WHS is not necessery to do this. You can get it here: http://keinplatz.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8C36276B2BB53CB6!183.entry

Morse code is otherwise known as Continuous Wave or CW.

I rolled up an add-in to make tweaking this easier than registry hacking. You can check it out at mediasmartserver.net. This also lets you adjust the speed of the code (which is another registry DWORD value named WPM).
