SATA Hard Drive Prices Continue to Fall

It's a great time to be alive if you are a storage junkie. Prices on high capacity hard drives, continue to fall. This allows for affordable multi-terabyte systems for use in the home. NewEgg has lowered it's prices on the following Western Digital SATA drives (perfect for HP MediaSmart Server EX470 or DIY Home Servers):

Size Price Was Dollars/GB
500 GB $99 $104 $0.1980
750 GB $149 $159 $0.1987
1 TB $234 $239 $0.2340

Based on this, the "sweet spot" seems to be the 750 GB drive. It's cost/GB is basically the same as the 500 GB (at just under 20 cents), but you of course get more GBs per package where physical expandability is finite. In fact, I orders 2 of the 750 GB drives myself today. You will pay a premium for the 1TB drive, but at a little over 23 cents/GB it is still a good value.

Fin. Why not comment on what you've just read or even Digg It!

How do these drives compare to the so called server drives?

Seagate Barracuda ES.2
Western Digital Caviar RE2

Do these drives operate better for WHS?

Unless the drives are actually taking a beating (like they would in a data center), these drives will hold up just fine.

They keep dropping...

I just ordered a Samsung 750Gb from NewEgg for $129.99 (that's just $0.173/Gb)

They were even lower last weekend for the 750GB WD green drives. I ordered five of them for $129 each. To put four in a port multiplier for my EX470. I've already upgraded the memory with your instructions. Now I need to upgrade the processor since you posted the instructions.
Thanks. Without those instructions I would have never done the upgrade.

Best Buy has Seagate 1 TB drives for $189 each this week. I picked up 3 of them and the EX475. I promptly returned it and picked up the EX470 when I realized they were basically charging me $150 to $200 for a 500 GB hard drive!
