Stuff to pimp your Windows Home Server

Hacking Windows Home Server is a blog dedicated to Microsoft's WHS technology. Brought to you by Donavon West, Microsoft MVP and author of LiveGadgets.net and donavon.com I'll also discuss the Hewlett-Packard HP MediaSmart Server EX470, EX475, EX485, EX487, the T7-HSA Tranquil Harmony Home Server and any other new Home Server hardware platforms that arise. You can also call this hacking or hackz. In any case I will show you some cool things to make your Microsoft Windows Home Server even sweeter.

WHS Oval Stickers, Free or $1 (your choice) [ENDING SOON!]

Free WHS Sticker

To help promote Microsoft's Windows Home Server (with my blog ridding along on it's coat tails smile_regular) I've made up several hundred of these ultra cool, ultra chic WHS stickers. One of them can be yours free of charge. All you have to do is send a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) to the following address and I'll send back a WHS sticker (one per person please):Free WHS Sticker

**** SASE Program Canceled! **** Use PayPal Below (for a limited time)

These are 4 x 6" ovals printed on durable polyester sticker stock. These stickers are built to handle extreme temperatures and won't fade in the sun or rain. Paste one on your car, your laptop, your bike or even on your Windows Home Server itself, like this (see photo right).

Each sticker weighs less than one ounce, so a standard $0.42 stamp (or $0.44 after May 11th) will do if you're in the United States. Enclose an international reply coupon (IRC) if you're outside of the United States. Again, they measure 4 x 6", so check the envelope to make sure that the sticker will fit. In the US, a #10 envelope works quite nicely.

I figured if Google can do it then so can I, right? After all, what does Google have that I don't (except $11.2 billion dollars cash on hand)? Oh yeah, that's where the one dollar comes in. The stickers aren't free, so if you slip a crisp $1 bill (or Euro or whatever) into the envelope, I won't tell anybody. It's not necessary and if you don't I'll still still send you a sticker, but it will help defray the costs and allow me to order more when these run out. Because without your help, when they run out, they are gone FOREVER! Enough guilt trip for you? :)

Just like Google: Our lawyers asked us to make sure it was clear that your contact information won't be maintained in any way and these stickers are "void where prohibited and only while supplies last". (Yeah, like we can afford lawyers). Please allow several weeks for delivery as I'm lazy about going to the Post Office.

No time to lick a stamp?

After my PayPal experiment with the "Vail" t-shirts, I'm willing to give PayPal a try for the WHS Stickers as well. You can use the following button to order a sticker. You will be charged 80 cents for the stamp, envelope and PayPal fees (they do take a bite). You can also make an optional donation of $1 to $5. PayPal orders are for United States readers only.

**** UPDATE ****

sticker-pack

Microsoft has given me a stack of various WHS stickers too. There is a "Mommy" sticker, a tatoo inspired WHS sticker and a WHS tray status icon sticker. So along with my original WHS sticker, I'll throw one of each into the SASE (again, while supplies last). So you really get 3 or 4 stickers for the same low, low, low price!

To those early adopters who's letters were already returned, I'm sorry, but there was really no way of knowing that I would get these extra stickers. If you really want these new stickers too, send another SASE. It will only cost you two stamps.

Note that many of the WHS stickers were give out at the 2009 MVP Summit (including one on Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer's forehead), and they are running out fast, so act now! More on the Steve Balmer incident straight from the horses mouth later (I am the horse in this case).

**** UPDATE 2 ****

I've about run of of stickers. I've cancelled the SASE program and will accept PayPal orders only for a short period of time. Don't worry. Any orders that can't be fulfilled will be refunded.

**** UPDATE 3 ****

The sticker offer has expired. Thanks to everyone for their support. I hop you enjoy your WHS stickers! (the last dozen or so are in the mail)

I think you mean you wouldn't mind getting a dollar to help *defray* costs. "Deferring" costs will only come back to bite you...

@Greg - I wouldn't want that to happen. Thx.

Would love to help, but as I'm based in the UK I'm going to struggle with the SASE (well at least with the US stamp). Do you have a donation option instead?

Anonymous said...

I would also like a sticker, but I am in Australia so also need to know about a donation option if available..?

@international readers - I'm looking into costs for shipping outside of the US and will let you all know as soon as I can. It will likely be a flat fee paid with PayPal, but no promises yet.

@Norman - Thanks! They should be going out the door like hotcakes now! I'm trying to get more pics and video, so stay tuned.

@international readers - I'd like to help, I really would, but rates to different countries varies so much and I can't spend time looking up all of these rates.

I'm already spending a lot of time each week stuffing and licking envelopes (thank you to those who send self stick envelopes BTW). :) I don't mind doing this, but I can't be looking up international rates as well. Sorry. :(

But you can still order a sticker! This is precisely what an International reply coupon (IRC) is for. It is the international equivalent of a SASE.

I now accept PayPal (still for domestic US orders only). It's actually cheaper that two stamps and two envelopes.

This PayPal experiment is just that, an experiment. I could pull the plug at any time and go hack to snail mail, but I hope it works out.

My IRC is on it's way from AUS...

Bump for info PLEASE!!!!!!

Donavon West said...

If you are one of the people who has been waiting (and waiting) for your stickers, I'd like to inform you that they have shipped!

I'm also pulling the plug on the sticker program as I'm getting very low on stickers. In the mean time, I will still accept PayPal orders. The SASE program has ended.

Thanks for all of the excitement and I hope that you are enjoying the stickers!

The last dozen or so are going out today, including a sheet with 5 addresses that fell behind my desk!!! Sorry about that guys.

@Zuntar - I'll double check to see if yours is one of the newly un-lost.

Donavon West said...

@Zuntar - I have no electronic record of your order. Was it via PayPal or post? Email your address to me and I'll send out another packet.
