Change your Web Site Image

You've got your Windows Home Server all setup but when you bring up your web site (YOUR web site) you see a stock photo of some happy family playing in the yard. If this is *my* Home Server, why doesn't Microsoft allow me to have *my* photo on the home page?

I'll show you how to get rid of Mr/Mrs Smith, young Billy and little Suzie and replace it with a picture of your happy family (you don't have to be playing in the backyard or look happy if you don't want to). Before you begin, you will need the following:

  • A photo editor such as Photoshop
  • An image of your own

If you're ready to go, here are the steps to change the image.

  1. Open Windows Explorer (press the Window-E key) and go to \\homeserver\c$\Inetpub\home\images (where "homeserver" is the computer name of your Windows Home Server).
  2. You should see a file named i_landingpage_main.png. Load it into your favorite editor.
    i_landingpage_main - Copy
  3. The image contains not only the photo of the family described above, but some other blue gradient.
  4. Also load the image that you would like to use.
  5. Resize and/or crop your image to 359x250 pixels.
  6. Place your image on top of the pretty family and save the image back the Home Server as a 24bit PNG file.
    i_landingpage_main
  7. Finally, bring up a browser and go your your Home Server page and you should now see your shiny new image.

There, much better. What a handsome looking couple!

Yes, this is completely accurate as this is how i personally did it in the days of the beta, but now for the targeted user, using add-ins such as Andrew Grant's WHIIST or Jay Hinrichs' WHS Customizer. those are much easier for the regular user to use - and even for the power user it saves time and just simplifies the whole process...

@josh, Thanks. I tend to be a brute force kinda guy. You are absolute correct that tools such as WHS Customizer do make it easier for most users. To that end, here is a link to the the WHS Customizer download. Thanks for pointing that out.

I had a much easier time using this process. Does anybody know where the image resides for the page that appears after you log into your home server?

Great info - it left me with a question though. How did you change the text at the top of the login page? (where it says "WHS Website" by default). I can't find that file anywhere. Any direction would be appreciated.

Thanks!

To answer Jeff's question:
The location of the image on the Remote page is:
C:\Inetpub\remote\images\i_default_photo.png
I haven't figured out the correct pixel size of your image that needs to cover the existing one. You'll need to experiment with it.

To answer nick name's question regarding changing the Web Site Headline on WHS:
To change your Website Headline in on the WHS Remote site:
1. Log in to the console.
2. Click "Settings".
3.On the left of the Settings window, click the "Remote Access" button.
4. At the bottom of the window under "Web Site Settings" you'll see "Web Site Headline".
This is where you can change the text at the top of the login page and the remote access page.

I followed the instructions and now I just have the blue background. When I open the .png it looks like it should. I even restored the original but it still looks the same. Any ideas?

This may be a stupid question, new to this, but when i type in the URL for my webpage it takes me straight to the logon page, I dont see the picture as described any more? what am i doing wrong?

Thanks for the tips! Donavon, after seeing a picture of you at what looks like your wedding, I have to know... What did you get paid to do the Geico Motorsports commercial? Seriously, WHS, an MSMVP, AND actor, freaking cool dude. =)

Can I assume there are no new updates with added function?

I followed your software hack to change my home page picture, and also changed the remote page picture. I created a Photoshop file with the gradient that matches the one on the remote page picture. I can send you it if you are interested in posting it, as it is basically the only difference between your tutorial for changing the home page picture and changing the remote page picture.

@John

I had the same issue. It's very picky how you replace the image into the inetpub\image directory. First copy the original image into a new folder for safe keeping for backup. Then make sure all parameters (756 x 316, file name) are correct on your new image. Now delete the default image from the image directory. Copy and paste your new image into the directory. Simply replacing your old image with new image by dragging and dropping into the direcory does not work. You have to delete the original file first from the directory.

I was trying to do this following your instructions but when I attempt to access the \\homeserver\c$\ directory, it prompts me to enter my username and password but then tells me that "\\homeserver\c$\ not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissons." I do have permission, its my server and this is the primary account. I am actually wanting to change out both images as well as some of the background images to customize the look of the homeserver web access pages. Any help is appreciated!

Nothing works anymore. It's a shame that I waited so long to jump on the WHS bandwagon.
